Your Home Away From Home

Your home away from home used to be an advertising slogan for a major hotel chain in the eighties. A hotel should and can just be that, in particular if you travel on a regular basis or spend an extensive period of time in a hotel.
If you want the hotel to be your second home, don't make yourself anonymous and get to know some of the hotel staff, starting with the concierge, bell and front desk staff. I bet you that most hoteliers can tell you numerous stories of regular guests that stayed with them and the efforts they undertook to make these guests comfortable.

One of my favorites was a gentleman that stayed with us probably 40 weeks per year. Every Sunday night the same room was waiting for him. He often times kept his luggage in his room over the weekend and unless the hotel was full we made sure the room stayed empty.

One Monday morning he stopped me in the lobby and asked why the room was rented over the weekend. When I asked him how he knew it was rented, he responded: "I came out of the shower and in the steamed up mirror there was a huge heart with an arrow through it!". We both had a chuckle and over time Brad became a close friend.

So tell the hotel staff what your preferences are. What room you like on your next visit; if a fridge could be placed in your room, where to get good ball tickets and so on.

Hospitality professionals are just that. You will be amazed to what lengths these people will go to make you part of their professional lives.
